Welcome
Brooklyn Developmental Disabilities Council
The Brooklyn Developmental Disabilities Council is open to service providers, family members, people with disabilities, representatives of state and local government agencies and anyone concerned with the needs and quality of life for people with developmental disabilities in Brooklyn. We provide an important vehicle for networking, sharing resources and information and identifying unmet needs.
Much of the Council’s activities are conducted through our standing committees: Children’s Services, Family Support, Service Coordination, Transition, Senior Services, Public Information and Legislative Committees as well as annual events like the Brooklyn Family Support Fair and the Legislative Breakfast.
The Council also serves in an advisory capacity to the New York State and New York City Government. We have representatives from the Brooklyn office of the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene in the leadership. In addition, we advise and get support from the Brooklyn Family Support Services Advisory Council (BFSSAC) and Inter-Agency Council of Developmental Disability Agencies (IAC).
What are Developmental/Intellectual Disabilities?
Intellectual/Developmental Disability (I/DD) is an umbrella term that encompasses a variety of conditions including mental retardation, cerebral palsy, autism, epilepsy and neurological impairments. The disability must have been diagnosed prior to age twenty-two and the disability must be expected to last a lifetime. In addition, it must constitute a substantial challenge to a person’s ability to function independently in everyday life.
Get Involved!
There are lots of ways to advocate, get information and to get services. Individuals, family members and agency staff are all welcome to participate. You can attend the monthly Council Meetings at 177 Livingston 2ndFloor at 10AM on the fourth Monday of every month September though June.
Spread the word!
Agencies and programs can let the community know what about theirs services and events. Joining the Council as an agency can help you reach out to those who need help and keep you informed about events and issues in our community. It is inexpensive and easy to become an agency member.
